Who are they? The story
Ice Qream is an 7-piece singing and dancing J-pop-inspired idol group from Quebec, Canada, whose mission is to share their passion and knowledge of J-pop idols in North America. They aim to make people enjoy the best parts of J-pop idols by being a group that people can support and meet right here in North America, and by recreating the vibes of Akihabara underground live shows during their concert, by focusing on wotagei and crowd interaction. Started in 2016 by a group of friends, the group now has 3 active generations of members, over 40 covers from J-pop idol music, one original single, and many stage performances under their belt. Their sweetness will make you melt!
Why? Their mission.
Idol culture is a sub-culture of Japanese popular culture that is still mostly unknown in North America, despite getting more popular through anime. Their mission is to make J-pop idols more popular here, so that more events and concerts invite them. Idol anime are also sharing false ideas about this culture that the group aims to demystify. They do that by holding concerts and events that are as authentic as possible to what you can see in Japan, and also by teaching their knowledge through informative panels at cons. They also want to share their passion for singing and dancing in hopes to inspire young girls to also follow their dream. In short, they are trying to popularise and teach about the Japanese idol culture.
How do they share their passion?
Concerts
They offer live shows with vibes similar to those of real idol concerts you can see in Japan. The concerts can be of variable length depending on the availability of the stage.
Panels and Workshops
They inform the community by demystifying the false ideas conveyed in anime shows.
They currently have 4 differents panels and workshops but they are always working on more:
-
J-pop Idol 101
To initiate people about the idol culture in Japan.
-
Best Idols MV of the Year
To help people discover new idol groups and open their horizon on idol music.
-
Let’s Wotagei - Wotagei 101
To initiate people to the wotagei culture, those calls and moves fans do during idol concerts.
-
Dance workshop
To teach everyone a japanese idol dance.
Maid Café / Maids
They can run a Maid Cafe at your events, trying to be as close as possible as Japanese Maid Cafe by serving really cute foods, holding songs performance and taking chekis with the customer. They can also simply be performing maids at your event.
Canadian Idol Festival
Inspired by popular Tokyo Idol Festival, this is a Festival that gives the chance to all aspiring idol groups and dance cover groups to hold a mini-performance on a stage and to assemble the community together. An edition was successfully held at G-Anime 2020.
